Universal Property Insurance Claim Help

Condo unit and home claims in Florida. Call Homeland before you call Universal.

Short answer: Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Company is Florida’s second-largest residential insurer and by far the largest insurer of condo units (HO-6), with about 3 of every 10 Florida condo unit policies. It is part of Universal Insurance Holdings (NYSE: UVE).

Last reviewed: October 2026

Before you call Universal, call Homeland. The first report of a loss frames the whole claim. We review your policy, document the damage and give Universal written notice of the claim for you. Florida (305) 783-3777 · New Jersey (732) 517-3777 · Se habla español.
Universal is not UPC. United Property & Casualty (UPC) was ordered into liquidation in February 2023, and its claims went to FIGA. Universal Property & Casualty is a different company, and it is active. See insolvent insurers and FIGA.

Before you call Universal

Call us first. We read your policy, then report the claim to Universal in writing, with the facts and photos that support it.
Before anything is thrown out, photograph and video every room, the roof and the outside, and keep damaged items. Make only the repairs needed to stop more damage, and keep every receipt.
Talk to us before you give a statement or sign anything, whether it comes from the insurance company or a contractor.
We get the full policy, not just the declarations page, because the endorsements and exclusions decide the claim.

Your deadlines and Universal’s, in Florida

Notice of the claim must be given within 1 year of the date of loss for a new or reopened claim, and within 18 months for a supplemental claim (Fla. Stat. §627.70132). We give that notice for you.
The insurer acknowledges your claim within 7 days, sends you its adjuster’s detailed estimate within 7 days after the adjuster prepares it, and pays or denies within 60 days of notice unless factors beyond its control intervene (Fla. Stat. §627.70131).
If you disagree on the amount, your options include re-documenting and negotiating, the appraisal clause in your policy, and free mediation through the Florida Department of Financial Services. See every option, compared.

Where Universal claims most often need help

With more condo unit policies than any other Florida insurer, many Universal claims are condo water losses: a leak from the unit above, a common-pipe break, or a roof leak into the unit. Who pays depends on Florida’s master policy rule (§718.111(11)) and your HO-6. See master policy vs. HO-6. Florida’s $10,000 water-damage sublimit on some policies is another frequent issue: how it works.

How Homeland helps with your Universal claim

We represent you, not the insurance company. We read your policy, document the loss, prepare a line-item estimate, and handle the claim with Universal’s adjusters from start to finish, in English or Spanish. If Universal has already paid or denied, upload the letter or estimate to Claim Review for a free first read.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call Universal first?
Call us first. We review your policy and the damage, then give Universal written notice of the claim, so the claim starts with the facts that support it.
Is Universal Property the same as UPC?
No. United Property & Casualty (UPC) was ordered into liquidation on February 27, 2023. Universal Property & Casualty is a separate, active insurer.
Does my Universal condo policy pay for damage from the unit above?
It depends on what was damaged and where the water came from. Finishes inside your unit are usually your HO-6’s; the building as originally installed is the association’s. Call us and we’ll read both policies.
