Perth Amboy Storm and Flood Facts
- Superstorm Sandy pushed the tide at the Sandy Hook gauge — which the National Weather Service uses as the reference for the Raritan Bay shoreline in Middlesex County — to an estimated 14.4 feet (MLLW) on October 29, 2012, more than four feet above any other reading on record there. The NWS says major tidal flooding begins at 8.7 feet, when "vulnerable homes and businesses may be severely damaged or destroyed."
- The State of New Jersey's 2014 Hazard Mitigation Plan lists Perth Amboy's marina and waterfront among the places Sandy destroyed. In June 2013, FEMA approved $4,319,560 (75 percent of the project cost) to repair the Perth Amboy Marina, covering docks, bulkheads, three fishing piers, nine floating docks, 79 light poles and the complete replacement of the docks' electrical and water systems.
- Sandy was not the only time Raritan Bay has gone past the major-flood mark. The same NWS record lists Hurricane Donna (September 12, 1960) and a December 11, 1992 nor'easter at 10.1 feet and Hurricane Irene (August 28, 2011) at 9.8 feet, and the NWS notes that flooding begins in Perth Amboy while tides are still in the upper part of the minor range. In 2021, Middlesex County was among the first six New Jersey counties named in the federal major disaster declaration for Ida (September 5, 2021).
