Miami-Dade County Storm and Claim History
- During Hurricane Irma on September 10, 2017, a National Hurricane Center station listed as Tamiami Park/FIU, at Florida International University in northwest Westchester, recorded an 81 mph wind gust at 1:08 p.m. The National Weather Service says almost all of Miami-Dade County saw peak gusts of Category 1 strength (80–95 mph), and 55,012 insurance claims were filed in the county.
- As Tropical Storm Philippe passed on October 28, 2017, an EF0 tornado touched down at a shopping center near Bird Road and SW 92nd Avenue in Westchester. At the Bird Bowl Shopping Center it broke a store's front window and peeled off part of the roof, which let water into the building. It then downed power lines and fences and caused minor roof and siding damage to homes near SW 36th Street and SW 95th Avenue.
- On February 4, 2024, a National Weather Service storm survey found a swath of straight-line wind damage, with gusts estimated at 60 to 70 mph, that cut through The Hammocks, Kendall Lakes, Westchester and West Miami. The damage included snapped trees and large downed branches.
- Average homeowners insurance premium in Miami-Dade County: $5,975 a year with wind coverage, $3,779 without; condominium unit owners $2,801 with wind, averaged across all insurers, insured values and deductibles (Florida OIR, Property Insurance Stability Report, July 1, 2026; data as of March 31, 2026).
