Palm Beach County Storm and Claim History
- The 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane made landfall in Palm Beach County as a Category 4 storm on September 16, 1928, and pushed Lake Okeechobee over its southern dikes. The National Weather Service reports floodwaters rose roughly an inch per minute in Belle Glade and reached about 7 feet above ground there, with the storm killing at least 2,500 people region-wide — one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
- That 1928 flood inundated an area roughly 6 miles wide and 75 miles long around the lake's south end, with Belle Glade, Pahokee, Canal Point, Chosen, and South Bay among the hardest-hit communities; NOAA (Blake et al., 2005) estimated damage at about $25 million in 1928 dollars.
- The disaster directly prompted construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike around Lake Okeechobee, the levee system that still protects Belle Glade and the surrounding Glades communities from lake flooding today.
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers marked substantial completion of the Herbert Hoover Dike rehabilitation on January 25, 2023; work on the 143-mile dike around Lake Okeechobee began in 2005 and finished three years ahead of schedule.
- During Hurricane Irma in September 2017, a weather station on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee recorded a peak wind gust of 71 mph, while gusts reached Category 1 strength (80–90 mph) across Palm Beach County, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.
- Average homeowners insurance premium in Palm Beach County: $6,323 a year with wind coverage, $3,175 without; condominium unit owners $2,311 with wind, averaged across all insurers, insured values and deductibles (Florida OIR, Property Insurance Stability Report, July 1, 2026; data as of March 31, 2026).
