Passaic Storm and Flood Facts
- When the remnants of Hurricane Ida intensified after 6 p.m. on September 1, 2021, the Passaic River overflowed and floodwater in parts of Passaic ran more than six feet deep, CBS New York reported. Mayor Hector Lora said "we had firefighters swimming in the streets, as if they were in the river," and a 70-year-old man drowned after floodwater overtook his vehicle; firefighters rescued his wife and son.
- Days later, on September 5, 2021, Passaic County was one of the first six New Jersey counties included in the federal major disaster declaration for Ida (FEMA-4614-DR), opening FEMA Individual Assistance to residents. By mid-October, NJ Spotlight News reported, FEMA had approved more than $138 million for more than 27,000 applicants statewide.
- On the night of March 14, 2024, a side wall of an apartment building at 120 President Street gave way, and close to 70 people were evacuated from the complex and a neighboring building, CBS New York reported. Mayor Lora said the building was old, and pointed to "heavy rains, very strong winds" as worsening existing problems; the cause was still under investigation.
