What Insurance Claim Assistance Is Available

After a hurricane, fire, water leak or other loss, most property owners deal with the insurance company alone. You do not have to. These are the main sources of help, and who each one works for:

The insurance company’s adjuster. A staff or independent adjuster evaluates the claim for the carrier. They are often helpful, but their job is to assess the claim for the insurance company.
A licensed public adjuster. A public adjuster represents the policyholder, documenting the loss, preparing the claim, and advocating for the property owner throughout the process. See what a public adjuster is.
An attorney. An attorney becomes relevant if a dispute moves toward litigation, which many well-built claims never need to reach.
State programs. Florida’s Department of Financial Services runs a free mediation program for disputed property claims, and in both states you can file a complaint with the state insurance department.

How a Licensed Public Adjuster Helps

Homeland Public Adjusters is a licensed public adjusting firm that represents property owners, not insurance companies, in Florida and New Jersey since 2006. On a claim we:

1
Inspect and document the entire loss, including damage that shows up after the first look: the roof, the attic, behind walls and under floors.
2
Prepare a line-item estimate with overhead and profit, code upgrades and depreciation itemized, and the sworn proof of loss.
3
Handle every call, inspection and letter with the insurer, its engineers and its desk adjusters, so you are not managing the claim on your own.
4
Negotiate the payment, the holdback and any supplemental claim, and prepare mediation or appraisal if the carrier will not move.

Our fee is a percentage of what the insurer pays, explained in writing before you hire us, and nothing if there is no recovery. Florida caps public adjuster fees at 20% (10% for claims from a declared emergency during the year after the declaration); New Jersey requires fees to be reasonable. See public adjuster fees.

Three Free Online Tools

Not sure you need a public adjuster yet? Start with the document you have in hand. Each tool gives you a first read in plain English, then a licensed public adjuster follows up.

Each tool is free, with no obligation. It is an automated first read so the adjuster who calls has seen what you see; it does not tell you what your claim is worth. General information, not legal or insurance advice.

ClaimsHub: Follow Your Claim Online

When you hire Homeland, your claim runs on ClaimsHub, Homeland’s own online portal for clients. Follow your claim, see and download the documents we share with you, upload documents, photos and videos, and contact your Homeland team, in English or Spanish. Already a client? Log in to ClaimsHub.

When to Ask for Help

New damage, before the insurer’s inspection
An estimate that looks too low
A denial or reservation of rights letter
A claim closed without payment
A large loss: fire, hurricane, roof or flood
A condo or HOA master-policy claim
A business or rental property loss
No time to manage the claim yourself

If the claim was already denied or underpaid, see denied and underpaid claims and how to reopen a claim closed without payment. If the damage just happened, read what to do in the first 24 hours and how a property damage claim works step by step.

Deadlines to Know

Florida. Florida law requires notice of an initial or reopened property claim within 1 year after the date of loss, and notice of a supplemental claim within 18 months after the date of loss. Your insurance company generally must acknowledge your claim within 7 calendar days, and pay or deny the claim within 60 days after receiving notice of it. Your policy may include its own requirements, so do not wait.

New Jersey. New Jersey regulations require insurers to begin an investigation within 10 working days of notice of a claim, and set a 30-calendar-day period, running from receipt of a properly executed proof of loss, for first-party claims. If more time is needed, the insurer must explain why in writing, with updates every 45 days, unless a clear justification or other law provides otherwise.

Insurance Claim Assistance FAQs

Is insurance claim assistance from Homeland free?
The online tools and the first review are free, with no obligation. If you hire Homeland, our fee is a percentage of what the insurance company pays, explained in writing before you hire us, and nothing if there is no recovery. Florida caps public adjuster fees at 20%, or 10% for claims from a declared emergency during the year after the declaration; New Jersey requires the fee to be reasonable.
Can a public adjuster help if I already filed my claim?
Yes. Many clients call after the claim is filed, after the insurer’s inspection, or after a low payment or a denial. We compare the insurer’s decision with the policy, the documented damage and the estimates, within the applicable deadlines.
What is the difference between a public adjuster and the insurance company’s adjuster?
An insurance company adjuster evaluates the claim for the carrier. A public adjuster represents the policyholder, documenting the loss, preparing the claim, and advocating for the property owner throughout the process.
Do you help in Spanish?
Yes. Hablamos español. Our team answers 24/7 in English or Spanish, and ClaimsHub works in both languages.
Where does Homeland provide claim assistance?
Homeland Public Adjusters holds Florida Agency License W818638 and New Jersey Firm License 3003982360 and serves property owners throughout both states. See our Florida and New Jersey pages.
