Atlantic City Storm and Flood Facts
- Superstorm Sandy made landfall just south of Atlantic City at about 8 p.m. on October 29, 2012, and the tide at the Atlantic City gauge peaked at 8.8 feet (MLLW), tying the second-highest tide on record there (the gauge's record begins in 1911). The National Weather Service says major tidal flooding begins at 8.0 feet, the level at which "vulnerable homes and businesses may be severely damaged or destroyed."
- Sandy caused serious damage to nine percent of the homes in Atlantic City, according to the State of New Jersey, and more than 300 Atlantic City homeowners later received state aid to rebuild. Ten years on, at least 200 city homes were still classified as regular flood victims.
- A rare September nor'easter on September 26, 2026 brought Atlantic City its highest water levels since Sandy. Governor Mikie Sherrill said first responders rescued dozens of people after 2 to 3 feet of floodwater swept through homes and vehicles, and a state of emergency was declared across eight New Jersey counties including Atlantic County.
- After Hurricane Sandy, the President’s major disaster declaration for New Jersey was dated October 30, 2012 (FEMA-4086-DR), and Atlantic County was one of the first eight counties designated for FEMA Individual Assistance.
- A year earlier, Atlantic County was also designated for FEMA Individual Assistance under New Jersey’s major disaster declaration of August 31, 2011 (FEMA-4021-DR), issued for Hurricane Irene.

New Jersey regulations require insurers to begin an investigation within 10 working days of notice of a claim, and set a 30-calendar-day period, running from receipt of a properly executed proof of loss, for first-party claims. If more time is needed, the insurer must explain why in writing, with updates every 45 days, unless a clear justification or other law provides otherwise.
