Volusia County Storm and Claim History
- Hurricane Nicole struck Volusia County on November 9-10, 2022, and the county's damage assessment put total damage at more than $522 million, up from an original estimate of $481 million, with at least $50 million in Daytona Beach itself. In Daytona Beach Shores, the property appraiser reported more than $363 million in damage and 93 structures damaged, and more than 20 high-rise hotels and condos were evacuated over structural safety concerns.
- As Nicole's surf and erosion hit the coast on November 10, 2022, seven homes collapsed in Wilbur-by-the-Sea, just south of Daytona Beach, and Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said of the oceanside peninsula, "It is like a bomb has gone off on the peninsula up here on the oceanside." The National Hurricane Center reported that Nicole made landfall near Vero Beach as a Category 1 hurricane with beach erosion damaging beachfront structures in Wilbur-by-the-Sea.
- Volusia and Flagler counties, which include Daytona Beach and Palm Coast, were both designated for Individual Assistance and Public Assistance in the federal major disaster declaration for Hurricane Nicole (FEMA DR-4680, declared December 13, 2022).
- Hurricane Ian brought a wind gust of 76 mph to Daytona Beach International Airport and 15.42 inches of rain near New Smyrna Beach in September 2022, according to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center.
- Six weeks later, Hurricane Nicole produced a gust of 61 knots (about 70 mph) at Daytona Beach’s airport in November 2022, according to the National Hurricane Center.
