Alachua County Storm and Claim History
- When Hurricane Idalia passed north of Alachua County on August 30, 2023, the Gainesville Sun reported wind gusts peaking at 55 mph, nearly 8,000 Gainesville Regional Utilities customers without power at one point in the morning, about 9,100 Clay Electric customers out midday, and 70 reports of downed trees across the county, several of them on power lines.
- A line of severe thunderstorms moved through northwest Gainesville around 5:20 to 5:30 a.m. on November 30, 2020, causing what WCJB called extensive wind damage in the Sable Chase and Springtree neighborhoods near NW 39th Avenue and NW 34th Street. One resident described a tree falling on his house, and the National Weather Service said it did not plan a damage survey at that time, so no tornado was officially confirmed.
- The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Alachua County at 6:25 a.m. on June 16, 2023, after trained spotters reported a funnel cloud. WCJB reported uprooted and broken trees at homes in Newberry, with no confirmed touchdown and no injuries reported.
- Hurricane Irma’s center passed about 20 nautical miles west of Gainesville in September 2017, and Gainesville Regional Airport recorded a minimum pressure of 979.5 millibars, according to the National Hurricane Center.
- After Irma, the National Hurricane Center listed Alachua County among the counties where rivers reached major or record flood stages.
- Average homeowners insurance premium in Alachua County: $2,525 a year with wind coverage, $1,804 without; condominium unit owners $977 with wind, averaged across all insurers, insured values and deductibles (Florida OIR, Property Insurance Stability Report, July 1, 2026; data as of March 31, 2026).
