What Usually Goes Wrong

Payment delayed or partial

Repeated information requests, unexplained deductions or long periods without a decision stall recovery.

Experts don't agree

Contractor, engineer, hygienist and appraiser findings may conflict with the insurer's reports. Each needs to be answered with evidence.

Coverage disputed

Part or all of a claim can be disputed on exclusions, causation or policy language, so the policy has to be read against the loss line by line.

Deadlines approaching

Notice, proof of loss, replacement-cost and legal deadlines can all affect what is recovered.

What Homeland Documents

  • Every building, unit and structure, with its own scope
  • Equipment, machinery, inventory and contents
  • Business income and extra expense, with the financial records behind them
  • Code upgrades (ordinance or law), debris removal and mitigation
  • Tenant improvements, and owner and tenant claims under separate policies
  • Association master policy and unit owner claims, reconciled

How Homeland Handles It

1

Call Homeland first

Before you sign anything or throw anything out, talk to a licensed public adjuster who works for you, not the insurer.

2

We document and value the loss

We inspect, photograph and measure the damage and write our own detailed estimate. Nelson Avila is also a Florida Certified Residential Contractor and a property insurance appraiser and umpire.

3

We present and negotiate the claim

Homeland reports the claim on your behalf, meets the insurer's adjuster, presents the full claim and negotiates it, start to finish.

Questions

What counts as a large loss?
There's no single dollar line. A loss is large when the damage is extensive, the financial exposure is significant or the recovery is complicated: several buildings, specialized equipment, big inventories or months of lost income.
Who does Homeland represent on large losses?
Businesses, condo and HOA associations, apartment and multi-tenant buildings, hotels, warehouses, medical offices, churches, schools and nonprofits in Florida and New Jersey.
How long does the insurer have?
In Florida, a new or reopened claim must be reported within 1 year after the date of loss and a supplemental claim within 18 months (Fla. Stat. §627.70132), and the insurer must pay or deny within 60 days after notice of the claim (Fla. Stat. §627.70131). In New Jersey, the insurer must decide within 30 calendar days after receiving proofs of loss, unless it's clearly justified (N.J.A.C. 11:2-17.7).
