Escambia County Storm and Claim History
- Hurricane Sally made landfall on September 16, 2020, and Claims Journal reported that storm surge of roughly 6 to 7 feet hit coastal Escambia County communities including Pensacola, while downtown Pensacola took 24.8 inches of rain. Barges broken loose in Pensacola Bay damaged coastal structures, and one struck the Pensacola Bay Bridge, collapsing part of the southbound lane. Industry modelers AIR Worldwide and Karen Clark & Co estimated insured losses of $1 billion to $3 billion and about $2 billion, respectively.
- On June 16, 2023, Pensacola International Airport recorded 9.23 inches of rain in one day, the 13th-highest daily total on record, while Pensacola City Hall recorded 11.56 inches over nine hours. Emergency officials reported widespread and significant flash flooding around West Pensacola, Warrington and Gulf Breeze, with water entering several buildings, and the Escambia County Emergency Operations Center activated to Level Two.
- An EF-1 tornado with winds of about 100 mph, confirmed by the National Weather Service, struck the Fort Walton Beach area of Okaloosa County on April 22, 2018. It blew roofs off buildings at an apartment complex, including five public housing buildings, wrecked a home on Okaloosa Island, and displaced eight families, about 20 people.
- Hurricane Ivan made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama, on September 16, 2004, but its strongest winds hit the western Panhandle; the Florida Department of Environmental Protection reports extensive damage to downtown Pensacola and to the Interstate 10 bridges crossing Pensacola Bay.
- On Pensacola Beach alone, the same Ivan assessment counted 58 habitable structures seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line that were destroyed or sustained major damage, and 104 more with moderate to minor damage.
- Average homeowners insurance premium in Escambia County: $3,702 a year with wind coverage, $1,670 without; condominium unit owners $1,836 with wind, averaged across all insurers, insured values and deductibles (Florida OIR, Property Insurance Stability Report, July 1, 2026; data as of March 31, 2026).
