Before you call Citizens

Call us first. We read your policy, then report the claim to Citizens in writing, with the facts and photos that support it.
Before anything is thrown out, photograph and video every room, the roof and the outside, and keep damaged items. Make only the repairs needed to stop more damage, and keep every receipt.
Talk to us before you give a statement or sign anything, whether it comes from the insurance company or a contractor.
We get the full policy, not just the declarations page, because the endorsements and exclusions decide the claim.

Your deadlines and Citizens’, in Florida

Notice of the claim must be given within 1 year of the date of loss for a new or reopened claim, and within 18 months for a supplemental claim (Fla. Stat. §627.70132). We give that notice for you.
The insurer acknowledges your claim within 7 days, sends you its adjuster’s detailed estimate within 7 days after the adjuster prepares it, and pays or denies within 60 days of notice unless factors beyond its control intervene (Fla. Stat. §627.70131).
If you disagree on the amount, your options include re-documenting and negotiating, the appraisal clause in your policy, and free mediation through the Florida Department of Financial Services. See every option, compared.

Where Citizens claims most often need help

Citizens insures a large share of Florida’s rental dwellings and mobile homes, as well as homes and condo units, and writes wind-only policies where other insurers won’t. On a wind-only policy, the cause of the damage decides everything: wind is covered by Citizens, while water from other causes may fall under a different policy. Florida’s Legislature studied Citizens claims in 2010 and found represented policyholders typically received larger payments; see what the study found.
