Town Sightings is the live map in the free Adjuster Advantage app where residents report what they see around their homes. This guide covers each type of sighting: how to stay safe, and what to do if it damaged your home or business. Town Sightings is not an emergency service. For a fire, a downed power line or anyone in danger, call 911 first.
Street flooding
Stay safe
- Never drive or walk into flood water, and never drive around the barriers blocking a flooded road. (National Weather Service, Turn Around Don’t Drown)
- Just 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult, 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, and 2 feet can carry away SUVs and trucks. (National Weather Service, Turn Around Don’t Drown)
If it damaged your property
Flood damage is excluded from most standard homeowners policies, so it is usually a claim on a flood policy (NFIP or private). Before cleanup, photograph the water line on the walls and everything it reached.

Downed power lines Call 911 first
Stay safe
- Assume every downed power line is live, and call 911. (Electrical Safety Foundation International, Downed Power Lines)
- The ground around a downed line, up to 35 feet away, may be energized. Keep everyone and every pet back. (Electrical Safety Foundation International, Downed Power Lines)
- If a line touches your car while you are inside, stay in the car. Never touch a person who is in contact with a line. (Electrical Safety Foundation International, Downed Power Lines)
If it damaged your property
If a pole or line damaged your home, photograph it from a safe distance and let the utility make it safe before anyone goes near it. Then call Homeland: storm damage to the house, the roof and the electrical service is documented like any other storm claim.

Fire (home or building) Call 911 first
Stay safe
- Get out, stay out and call 911. Don’t go back in for belongings.
If it damaged your property
Smoke and soot travel far past the flames, and water from firefighting adds its own damage. Don’t throw away anything damaged until it has been documented.

Brush or wildfire Call 911 first
Stay safe
- Call 911 and leave when local officials tell you to evacuate.
If it damaged your property
Smoke and ash can damage a home that the fire never reached: roofs, air handlers, screens and everything inside. Document it before cleaning.
Call Homeland first: (305) 783-3777 FL · (732) 517-3777 NJ, 24/7.
Roof or building damage
Stay safe
- Stay out of a damaged building until it’s safe, and stay clear of unstable structures, downed lines and water.
If it damaged your property
Photograph the damage before any temporary repair, make only the repairs that stop more damage (a tarp, boarding up), and keep every receipt.
Call Homeland first: (305) 783-3777 FL · (732) 517-3777 NJ, 24/7.
Tree or debris down
Stay safe
- Stay away from any tree or limb touching power lines: treat the line as live and call 911. (Electrical Safety Foundation International, Downed Power Lines)
If it damaged your property
When a covered peril like wind brings a tree down on your house, the repair runs under your own homeowners policy, whoever owned the tree. Photograph the tree where it fell before it is cut up.

Sinkhole Call 911 first
Stay safe
- Keep people and pets away, and mark off the hole so no one walks or drives into it. (Florida Geological Survey (FDEP), information regarding sinkholes)
- Report a hole in a road to local law enforcement and your city or county road department. (Florida Geological Survey (FDEP), information regarding sinkholes)
If it damaged your property
In Florida, every property insurer must cover catastrophic ground cover collapse, while broader sinkhole loss coverage is offered for an additional premium, so many policies don’t include it. Check your declarations page, and call us before anyone tests or repairs the ground.

Stay safe
- Keep people and pets away and let officials handle it. Call 911 if anyone is in danger.
If it damaged your property

Water main break
Stay safe
- Stay out of the water in the street: it is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters. (National Weather Service, Turn Around Don’t Drown)
If it damaged your property
Where the water came from decides which policy responds, so photograph where it entered your property and how high it rose before cleanup.

Power outage
Stay safe
- Never use a generator inside your home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Use it outside, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents, with a battery-powered CO detector inside. (CDC, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Basics)
- A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours. A full freezer holds its temperature about 48 hours (24 hours if half full). (USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, Keep Your Food Safe During Emergencies)
If it damaged your property
Damage from a power surge when the lights come back can be a covered loss. Note when the power went out and came back, and keep the damaged equipment.
