Renters’ claims get denied or underpaid for some of the same reasons homeowners’ claims do, but renters often have less leverage going in — smaller policies, lower claim amounts, and less familiarity with how to push back.

Common reasons a renters claim gets denied

The carrier attributes the damage to a cause the policy excludes, such as a gradual leak or pre-existing condition; the loss is blamed on the building rather than something the tenant’s policy is meant to cover; or documentation of what was actually lost, and what it was worth, is thin.

Common reasons a renters claim is underpaid

Depreciation applied to replacement-cost items, a personal-property inventory that undervalues what was actually damaged or destroyed, or additional living expenses paid for a shorter period than the repair actually took.

What actually moves a denial or lowball offer: a specific, itemized inventory with reasonable valuations, and, where the cause of loss is disputed, documentation that supports what actually happened rather than the carrier’s assumption.

A denied or underpaid renters claim is not necessarily the end of it. Call Homeland before accepting a denial or a low offer as final — we can review the decision against your policy and the documentation on file.
